Description

Charles Sumner

ALS, four pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 7.75, March 7, no year. In part: “I have been gratified by receipt of your little note, which is not dated, & I am truly happy if any suggestions of mine have been of any service to you…To me it sounds of war. Such an injunction loses its vitality, unless addressed to a victor. It’s a proud Heathen sentiment, teaching a virtue, kindred to those which built up the military grandeur of Rome…If the virtue of magnanimity & generosity are included, if people are warned against selfishness, the teachings are narrowed to their own country. It is sweet to die for one’s country—so the poets sing; but they do not say it is sweet to suffer for right, for humanity, for the suffering man.” In very good condition, with an edge chip, toning, and show-through from writing to opposing sides. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
