TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, Star Trek letterhead, September 4, 1975. Letter to aerospace engineer and senior NASA manager Jesco von Puttkamer, in full: “Thank you for your letter and the most informative copy of your report to NASA on the Star Trek Convention and phenomenon. It is the best analysis of this subject that I have ever seen. Appreciate also the attached reports on NASA future space program planning and I will certainly study them carefully. I am a strong advocate of a greatly expanded NASA space program and regret that Star Trek was not on the air a couple of years earlier because I believe the phenomena which developed might have had considerable effect on public attitude toward financing NASA’s work. At least, the younger generations of voters who have grown up with Star Trek will probably give our space programs strong support when they become the key voting block in our country. We are moving close to that time since it is noticeable at conventions, as you mentioned, that older fans are now arriving at such gatherings with their ‘new fan’ children. I hope we can meet as our mutual friend Fred Durant suggested. We no doubt will have a lot to talk about.” In fine condition. Years before he created Star Trek, Roddenberry was a police science major with a fascination in aeronautical engineering. He obtained his pilot’s license, and served four years in the Air Force, even earning the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal. In addition to its fantastic letterhead visuals, this letter bridges the realms of science fiction and non-fiction, and acts as a wistful correspondence between two men whose similar interests and expertise influenced generations to look skyward.
