Description

Vintage handbills from early in the Merseybeat scene, with The Beatles and Rory Storm

Wonderful set of vintage handbills promoting various Liverpool musical acts, ranging in size from 5.25 x 7.25 to 5.75 x 9, dated between 1960 and 1961. Handbill showcases include: the ‘Swinging Lunch Time Rock Sessions’ at the Liverpool Jazz Society on March 15, 1961, listing The Beatles, Gerry and The Pacemakers, and Rory Storm and the Wild Ones as scheduled bands; a Gala Rock Night at Litherland Town Hall on February 16, 1960, featuring acts like Rory Storm and The Hurricanes, The Dominoes, and The Searchers; a La Mystere Clubs grand opening show at the Co-Operative Hall on February 3, 1961, headlined by Rory Storm and The Hurricanes; a Rory Storm and His Fabulous Hurricanes concert at the Countryside Hepland on March 31, 1961; and a ‘Meet the beat’ show for The Fabulous Cliff Roberts and The Rockers at Wallasey’s Grosvenor Ballroom on April 28. In overall fine condition, with some creasing to the Countryside Hepland handbill. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Jeff Gold at Record Mecca, letters of appraisal and authenticity from noted Beatles expert Frank Caiazzo, the latter indicating that the handbills originated from the personal collection of ‘Johnny Guitar’ Byrnes, who was a member of Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, the band Ringo Starr drummed with before joining The Beatles. An exceptional collection of early Merseybeat promotional flyers featuring some of the most influential players during the infancy of the 1960s rock scene.
