Description

James Otis

American statesman and lawyer (1725–1783) generally known as the originator of the phrase ‘No taxation without representation.’ Partly-printed ADS signed five times throughout the text, one page both sides, 7 x 13, August 11, 1755. Financial agreement filled out almost entirely in Otis’s hand, including a lengthy autograph statement on the reverse. In part: “Know all men by these presents, That I Nathaniel Cunningham…am Holden and stand firmly Bound and Obliged unto James Otis of Boston in the County of Suffolk…in the full and just Sum of Twenty six hundred & eight pounds…to be paid unto the said James Otis.” On the reverse Otis details several of the payments, signing “J. Otis” three times. In very good condition, with a complete separation to the central horizontal fold. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
