United States Air Force test pilot (1931–1966) selected as a NASA astronaut in 1963 and assigned to the crew of Gemini 9 with Elliot See; Bassett and See were killed on February 28, 1966, when their T-38 trainer jet crashed into McDonnell Aircraft Building 101.
