Description

The only uncanceled and uncut Washington check we have ever encountered

Rare Bank of Alexandria check, 6.75 x 2.25, filled out and signed by Washington, “G:o Washington,” payable to Abraham Herner for $25, October 6, 1797. Washington also amended the printed location to read “Mt. Vernon,” rather than Alexandria. Double-matted and framed with an engraved portrait. In fine condition. Washington was a depositor and stockholder in the Bank of Alexandria, which was the first bank in Virginia when it was established in 1792. In his will, he directed that his account and holdings in the institution be used to endow a free school for orphaned and indigent children.

Washington checks in such exceptional condition are virtually unobtainable. The last two Washington checks to appear at auction each sold for $37,500 and both were canceled and had condition issues; the check offered here is a far finer specimen, and the only known uncut example in existence. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
