War-dated ALS signed “Eddie,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, colorful patriotic letterhead, July 20, 1861. Letter from a Union soldier to his wife. In part: “I have seen some hard times since I have been away…We are fairly in among the enemy now, so much so, that 90 men from each Regiment are sent out every night as Picket Guard…There are 32,000 troops here, and I understand we are to wait here till there is 100,000…When we came to Martinsburg from Washington we came to guard a large Rifle Canon for his Battery and…it is said to be the best Canon in the Service. Major Doubleday says he is sure of any thing the size of a House at the distance of 7 Miles. It carries a 30 Pound Ball and I think it will tell pretty hard on some secess town before long.” In fine condition with light toning.
