Description

Important 1971 Sounds magazine award: “Top Wind Instrumentalist, Miles Davis”

Eye-catching award issued by the UK weekly music newspaper Sounds, measuring 3 x 5 x 3, with engraved golden text reading, “Sounds Poll Awards ’71, Top Wind Instrumentalist, Miles Davis.” The intriguing award consists of a dismantled pocket watch suspended in an acrylic block. In very good condition, with scattered scuffs and scratches and some cloudiness to the clear acrylic (mostly to sides and rear). Sounds, which continued to be published until 1991, was established in October 1970 by Jack Hutton and Peter Wilkinson, who left Melody Maker to start a ‘left wing’ rival. Having released the legendary Bitches Brew in 1970, Davis followed up with two albums in 1971: Jack Johnson and Live-Evil. These albums marked a major transition in his career, embodying his innovative experimentation as his music began to lean toward hard-edged electric funk. A unique and exceptional Miles Davis piece.
