Description

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

ALS signed “H. W. L.,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, June 25, 1874. Letter to his brother-in-law Thomas G. Appleton in London. In part: “Here we are all on the jump; crowding into four days Charley’s return; a ‘Lawn Party’; Dedication of Memorial Hall; Commencement Day, and Phi Beta! Charley arrived on Monday morning; some hundred days and more round the Cape from Singapore; looking well, but brown as mahogany…We are busy getting ready for Nahant. I wish I could slip away as easily as you do. But it is impossible…We will miss you terribly at Nahant. To me that house by the sea is a kind of healthy and pleasant prison; a St. Marguerite or St. Helena.” Mounting remnants to one corner, otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope addressed in Longfellow’s hand. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
