(Walt Disney Studios, 1942) Original production cel and production background featuring Donald Duck and Jose Carioca from Saludos Amigos, matted above a choice fountain pen signature and inscription, “To Neville, with best wishes, Walt Disney.” The cel has been trimmed and applied to a hand-painted background as prepared by Courvoisier Galleries for sale. Image measures 6 x 4.75, with a mat opening of 7.25 x 6.75. This piece is also re-framed to an overall size of 14 x 17.75 and includes the original Disney Courvoisier Galleries label. In fine condition, with a couple tiny cracks to the paint. Saludos Amigos featured the first appearance of Jose Carioca, the Brazilian cigar-smoking parrot who starred in The Three Caballeros two years later. The animated feature was financed in part by the US State Department as part of a broader outreach program to win over the hearts and minds of South American audiences. An exemplary piece from an important World War II–era Disney cartoon. Pre-certified Phil Sears.
