American writer (1832–1911) best known for such verses as ‘Rock Me to Sleep, Mother.’ AMS, one page, 5.25 x 8.25, no date. A full autograph copy of Akers’s sonnet ‘Solitude and Loneliness,’ in full: “The barren mountain-top is solitude / The Tangled wilderness, the pitiless seas / The wide waste plain whereupon no dwellings be / The twilight darkness of the untracked wood / Where, even at noon, the dim green shadows brood; / Yet the unburdened heart, at peace and free, / May find in each of these society, / And full response to every varying mood. / But in the struggling city, where the fight / For life and peace and wealth is merciless / In gorgeous halls with flowers and jewels bright, / Where beauty, youth and pleasure swarm and press, / Even within the crowded fireside’s light, / How many a soul finds utter loneliness!” In fine condition, with erased pencil notations.
