French aviator (1889–1915) who earned a place in aviation history as the first fighter ace. Though he was widely believed to have made the first loop in flight, on September 21, 1913, this feat was accomplished 12 days earlier by Pyotr Nesterov, a Russian army pilot. Pégoud was killed at the age of 26 when his plane was shot down by one of his students while intercepting a German reconnaissance aircraft during World War I. Rare 4.25 x 6.5 cabinet photo depicting the daring aerial course of a plane with a small portrait of Pegoud in the upper right corner, signed diagonally in black ink, “A. Pegoud.” The photo bears a pre-printed quote and facsimile signature and is published by ELD. Reverse is dated “1913” in an unknown hand and bears an affixed German newspaper clipping. In fine condition, with trivial soiling and a ding to lower right corner of the mount. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
