Description

James McClurg

Delegate to the Philadelphia Convention and lifelong friend of Thomas Jefferson (1746–1823). Manuscript DS, one page, 7.75 x 12, March 12, 1774. Document committing a young Irish man to indentured servitude. In part: “This Indenture Witnesseth that William Chamberlain father & Natural guardian of Arthur Chamberlain in Consideration of five Pounds eight shillings & six pence pair for the said Arthur Chamberlain’s Passage from Ireland by John Peden…the said William Chamberlain…doth bind and put his said son Arthur Chamberlain servant to the said John Peden to serve him his heirs & executors…during the full term of two years two months & one half thence…during all which term the said servant his said Master heirs or Executors faithfully shall serve & that honestly & obediently in all things as a good and dutiful servant ought to do.” Signed at the conclusion by McClurg as a witness and countersigned by the parties involved. Triple-matted with an image and plaque to an overall size of 20.5 x 17.5. In fine condition, with intersecting folds and expected document wear. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
