Union general in command of Fort Sumter who refused a formal demand for his surrender, leading to the bombardment of the fort and start of the Civil War (1805–1871). Ink signature, “Your sincere friend, Robert Anderson,” on an off-white 3.25 x 1.5 slip clipped from a letter. In fine condition, with a slightly split vertical fold to the left side. Accompanied by an unsigned carte-de-visite portrait of Anderson and an 1896 transmittal letter from his wife, Elizabeth B. Anderson, sending along “the autograph of Genl Anderson ‘to go with the photo which your little daughter prizes so highly.’” She also notes that she receives many similar requests that go unfulfilled, but she was compelled to respond because General Anderson loved children.
