Superb partly-printed vellum DS, signed “Franklin Pierce” as president and “Jeffer. Davis” as secretary of war, one page, 15.5 x 19, August 1, 1856. President Pierce appoints Edmund C. Bainbridge as “Brevet Second Lieutenant of Artillery in the service of the United States.” Boldly signed at the conclusion by both Pierce and Davis. The white paper seal affixed at the top remains intact. Matted to an overall size of 20.5 x 24. Intersecting folds (one vertical fold passing through the first letter of Pierce’s signature), light creases and mild foxing, and show-through from mounting strips to reverse, otherwise fine condition. Bainbridge participated in the Third Seminole War, Utah Expedition, and Civil War, where he served in the Union’s Fifth Artillery and in the Quartermaster's Department. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
