British philosopher and critic (1817–1878) and husband of novelist George Eliot. AQS on an off-white 4.25 x 3.5 slip, signed at the conclusion in black ink, “G. H. Lewes, 1 Decr 49.” Lewes pens a quote from his tragedy The Noble Heart, in full: “The world, good Herman, is as unripe growing fruit / With many scars & flecks upon its rhind / But at the core ‘tis sound… In the abysmal depths of crime there’s light / And if some vices will distort our nature / Still there’s a something in the heart of man / Keeps virtue and all goodness from decay.” Affixed at the top to a larger sheet. In very good condition, with a missing upper left corner tip, one horizontal fold, spreading to a stray blot of ink, show-through from mounting and adhesive remnants to reverse, and scattered soiling.
