Description

David G. Farragut

ALS signed “D. G. Farragut,” four pages, lightly-lined on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, personal monogrammed letterhead, May 3, 1867. Letter to Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles. In part: “I am greatly obliged to you for your kind letter…& the Remark it contains in reference to the European squadron—the status fully proves the desire you express. All the affairs I have heard of, are in accordance with my wishes, & I anticipate a most harmonious ship, & delightful cruise. The Fleet Secty’s appointment is made out & signed, but cannot be sent until the authority is invested in me. I have directed him to report as soon as the Franklin goes in commission. John will go as Captain Pennock’s clerk…I am glad that John is looking to his French—it is worth more in practical life, than all the dead Languages.” In very good condition, with a noticeable vertical fold passing through the first letter of the signature, scattered soiling, and a mounting strip to the right edge of the last page. Farragut was named commander of the European Squadron in April 1867 with the USS Franklin as his flagship. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
