James Chadwick

English physicist (1891–1974) who was awarded the 1935 Nobel Prize in Physics for his discovery of the neutron in 1932, thus paving the way towards the fission of uranium-235 and the creation of the atomic bomb. ALS, one page, 8 x 10, personal letterhead, March 10, 1973. Letter to an inquiring fan, in part: “I regret to say that I have no suitable photograph which I can send you. I have given away all the photographs which I had, chiefly in response to requests similar to yours. I cannot obtain more at present, for I am confined to the flat because of ill-health. The best I can do is to put my signature on the enclosed card.” In fine condition, with several horizontal folds, none affecting the bold signature. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
