Description

Franklin Pierce

LS signed “Frank. Pierce,” one page both sides, 7.5 x 9.75, December 14, 1848. Letter to President James K. Polk. In part: “I take the liberty to commend to your favorable notice the bearer Lieut. John McNab late of the 9th Regt. US Army. The sudden disbandment of the ten new Regiments has left him at this time without Employment, and it strikes me that the circumstances under which he entered the army—his valuable and distinguished services—his intelligence integrity and admirable qualifications eminently entitle him to some place in the service of the Government. He was for a long time and at the time of its disbandment the accomplished adjutant of the 9th Regt. His conduct on every field and throughout the whole campaign won for him the confidence of all his superior officers. It would be difficult to speak of his services above their merits.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds (one vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature), light show-through from writing to opposing sides, and two small holes to the left edge. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA.
