Uncommon official matte-finish 10 x 8 US Army photo of Truman with officers in the 129th Artillery Regiment during World War I, signed and inscribed vertically in fountain pen, “To: Joseph J. Fricelli, From: Harry S. Truman, signed 5/21/63.” Stamped on the reverse with a caption and US Army credit. An area of surface loss to the left border and slight creases to corners, otherwise fine condition. This image was captured in Chateau le Chanay, France, in December 1918—the month after the armistice. Truman’s artillery unit was responsible for some of the last shots of World War I, firing at German positions in Hermeville before the armistice took effect at 11 am. The battery did not lose a single man during Truman’s command in France, and his wartime experience brought forth his leadership qualities that proved vital to later political success.
