Description

Complimenting the “sharpness and precision that reigns” in Hollman’s Principles of Natural Philosophy

French mathematician and philosopher (1698–1759). LS in French, signed “Maupertuis,” one page, 6 x 8, April 3, 1750. Letter to the naturalist and philosopher Samuel Christian Hollman, thanking him for sending a kind letter along with his book Principles of Natural Philosophy, praising him for the “subtle and deep character” and the “sharpness and precision that reigns” in the work. Central vertical and horizontal folds, mild scattered foxing, and a bit of unobtrusive paper loss to left edge, otherwise fine condition. This year marked the final stage of his argument for the ‘principle of least action,’ an idea which he had developed over the course of two decades that culminated in the publication of his ‘Essay on Cosmology’ in 1750. It was the result of Maupertuis’s work in several areas of physics and he saw it as his most important accomplishment in the realms of both science and philosophy. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA.
