Supreme Court: William O. Douglas

Small archive of mostly humorous notes and letters sent by Douglas to Paul Doherty of New Hampshire, dated between 1960 and 1966, comprised of four ALSs, two ANSs on Supreme Court memo paper, and a TLS on Supreme Court letterhead. All are signed “Bill” except for one, which is unsigned. One ALS, in full: “The Big Bad Wolf met Little Red Riding Hood and said ‘I am going to eat you.’ ‘Eat me?’ asked Little Red Riding Hood, ‘Doesn’t anyone screw any more?’” Another ALS, in full: “Farmer to Doctor: ‘If that thing you say you’re taking my wife’s temperature with does not have numbers on it, you’re gong to get shot.” A third ALS, in full: “The rich man uses vaseline / The poor man uses lard / The nigger uses axle grease / and fucks just twice as hard.” In overall fine condition. Accompanied by four of the original mailing envelopes, three of which are addressed in Douglas’s hand. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
