Gardner as “Assistant Surgeon with the rank of First Lieutenant in the service of the United States.” Signed at the conclusion by President Grant and countersigned by Secretary of War James D. Cameron. The dark seal affixed to the upper left remains fully intact. In very good condition, with intersecting folds (a horizontal fold passing through the signature), scattered toning, and the signature a few shades light.
