ANS signed “Edward,” one page, 5 x 7, personal monogrammed letterhead, December 1951. In full: “To W. Somerset Maugham, with best wishes from Edward, Christmas 1951.” In fine condition. Letter is contained in a folded piece of paper from Maugham’s home in France, and was found laid into a hardcover edition of the Duke’s memoirs, A King’s Story, which is also present. The book bears an ownership signature of Maugham’s boyfriend Alan Searle, as well as a navy and gilt leather nameplate of Charles Posey. Book is in very good condition, with several chips and tears to the dust jacket and foxing throughout. A nice association between two significant British figures.
