Fridtjof Nansen

Norwegian explorer, scientist, diplomat, humanitarian, and Nobel laureate (1861–1930) who led the first crossing of the Greenland interior in 1888. Uncommon TLS, one page, 8.75 x 11.25, personal letterhead, June 22, 1923. Letter to F. H. Hooper of the Encyclopedia Britannica. In part: “It would have given me great pleasure, if possible, to write the article on ‘Scandinavia’ which you kindly ask me to do. But unfortunately my qualifications for such a task are too poor. I know too little about the subject, and it would take me much time to study the questions involved.” Central vertical and horizontal folds, light toning, and a few small edge tears, otherwise fine condition.
