War-dated partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 13 x 18, December 10, 1814. President Madison appoints Samuel B. Whittington as “a Surgeon’s Mate in the Navy in the Service of the United States.” Signed at the conclusion by President Madison and countersigned by Secretary of the Navy Benjamin Williams Crowninshield. The white paper seal affixed at the bottom remains crisply embossed and fully intact. In very good to fine condition, with intersecting folds and signatures quite light but legible.
