Description

American statesman (1762–1816) who served as Washington’s personal secretary and later assumed posts in the Jefferson and Madison administrations. War-dated LS, one page, 7.75 x 9.75, September 22, 1814. Letter to Colonel Jonas Simonds. In part: “The Treasurer US will transmit you Eight hundred Dollars, being amount…issued by the Sec’y of War, on account of contingencies, for which Sum you are held accountable.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds (a few folds passing through signature) and a small area of paper loss to left edge. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
