John F. Hartranft

Union general (1830–1889) awarded the Medal of Honor for his participation in the First Battle of Bull Run; he later served as a a special provost marshal during the trial of the Lincoln assassination conspirators, and led the convicted Mary Surratt, Lewis Paine, David Herold, and George Atzerodt to the gallows, where he read them their last rites before they were hanged. Partly-printed DS, signed “J. F. Hartranft,” one page, 7.5 x 9.75, November 22, 1866. As auditor general, Hartranft confirms the eligibility of a veteran’s widow for a pension. In part: “Application having been made to me by Elizabeth Ritner, widow of John Ritner of Berks Co, a soldier of the war of 1812, for the Gratuity and Annuity authorized…I hereby certify…that she is entitled to the benefits.” In fine condition, with expected document wear.
