Gen Comdg Dept.,” one page, lightly-lined both sides, 7.5 x 9.5, Headquarters, Department of Texas letterhead, April 4, 1866. Letter to D. H. Ingraham in Portland, Maine. In part: “It was my honor to command the 8th & 9th Maine in the early part of the war…and subsequently the 5th, 6th, & 7th Maine in the Army of the Potomac where these regiments held rank second to none…The remnants of the last three regiments were consolidated into one organization—the 1st Maine Veterans which took part in the brilliant campaign in the Valley of Virginia, in the autumn of 1864, and in the brief but glorious campaign against Lee which resulted in the evacuation of Richmond & Petersburg and the surrender of his army at Appomattox C.
