Sigel,” one page, lightly-lined both sides, 7.5 x 9.75, June 1, 1867. Letter to Confederate officer Charles Faulkner. In part: “I am preparing a memoir on the late American War, comprising especially a critical examination of the Campaign in Virginia in 1862…I have tried to gain such statistical information as seems to me necessary…I have before me all the reports of Genls. Lee, Longstreet, Jackson and others…the reports are, incomplete in regard to the composition and strength of the different corps & divisions…I would thank you for answering me the following: 1. How many and what brigades comprised the command of General R. H. Anderson shortly before and at the battle of Bull Run in August 1862? 2. When did he reach the army of general Lee…by what route did he come from Richmond? 3. To what division did the brigade of General Evans (N. G.) belong?…whatever other information in regard to the organization and strength of the confederate army during the Peninsula and Summer Campaign of 1862 you may fond convenient to give me, would be thankfully received.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds, some mild toning, and a small pencil notation to lower right corner. At the Second Battle of Bull Run, Sigel commanded a corps of the Army of Virginia, where he was wounded in the hand. The Union forces were routed and forced to retreat.
