Describing his command “on the first day of the battle of Gettysburg”

German-born Union general (1829–1906) who served as secretary of the interior under President Rutherford B. Hayes. ALS signed “C. Schurz,” one page both sides, 5.5 x 8.5, Hamburg American Packet Co. letterhead, April 2, 1889. Letter to H. G. Babcock. In part: “I beg to say that I never was appointed to the command of the 11th Army Corps. I commanded the 3rd Division of that corps and on the first day of the battle of Gettysburg, when after the death of Gen. Reynolds, the command of both the first and 11th corps, devolved upon Gen. Howard, the regular commander of the 11th corps. I, as a senior major general of the corps commanded the 11th for a few hours until an officer superior in rank to Gen. Howard, arrived on the field.” In fine condition, with central vertical and horizontal folds. RR Auction COA.
