Maurice Maeterlinck

Belgian playwright, poet, and essayist (1862–1949) awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1911. ALS in French, signed “Maeterlinck,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, August 5, 1906. Untranslated letter to English critic, journalist, and playwright Arthur Symons. In fine condition, with a few stray ink flecks. Symons (1865-1945) established himself as one of the leading experts of French literature. As the first English champion of the French Symbolist poets, Symons introduced British readers to new trends in French-language writing represented by Maurice Maeterlinck, Paul Verlaine, and others. Symons’ book, Plays, Acting and Music was dedicated Maeterlinck. RR Auction COA.
