Description

“There ought to be good ground for anticipating important Democratic gains”

TLS, one page, 7.75 x 9.5, personal letterhead, September 27, 1892. Letter to Walter H. Beecher. In part: “I am much gratified with the statement you make of Democratic activity in your locality. I desire especially to thank you for the pamphlets…I find in one of them at least, a collection of opinions in regard to the tariff which I have frequently been in need of. I have not seen lately any campaign literature which I think is more useful…there ought to be good ground for anticipating important Democratic gains as a result of your efforts.” Affixed by the left edge to a slightly larger card. In fine condition, with intersecting folds (one vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature). This is especially interesting as it was written during Cleveland’s successful campaign to re-take the presidency in the 1892 election, after being ousted from the office in 1888. Cleveland stood in strong opposition to high tariffs and crusaded for fiscal conservatism, making the content of this letter especially desirable. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
