Unusual AQS on an off-white 8 x 11 sheet, signed and inscribed at the conclusion to Hungarian writer Istvan Eorsi, “9/27/93, Allen for Istvan.” An intriguing poetic quote entitled “Slogan.” In full: “Join the Magyar / American Club for / Antifascist dishwashing.” Matted and framed to an overall size of 14.5 x 17.5. In very good condition, with scattered soiling, various small edge tears, and numerous pieces of tape affixed to the borders. In addition to his own novels, poetry, and political essays, Istvan Eorsi translated Ginsberg’s works to Hungarian. At the time he penned this quote, Ginsberg was with Istvan in Budapest. Three days later, Ginsberg began a letter to Gary Snyder with the same slogan, going on to mention Istvan (in part): ‘There’s alas a cultural blockade of Serbia which serves the war government. So Istvan my host drove to Belgrade via Novi Sad (Yugoslavia) auspices Soros Fund, to join dissidents, peaceniks, and pacifists isolated from outside news, info, and supportive culture—gave poetry readings and saw translators and old friends and learned a lot about the old and new politics of the Bosnia War.’ An interesting slogan and nice connection to Ginsberg’s dissidence in a country other than America—as an activist Ginsberg observed politics around the world (an interest implied in the title of his 1968 collection, Planet News), and he spent a lot of time in Eastern Europe, a frequent topic in his writing.
