ALS, one page, 5.25 x 6.5, personal letterhead, April 1947. Short letter to his Greenwich Village dry cleaner. In full: “With apologies. I’m sorry I took so long paying my bill. What can you expect from a Wild Thing?” On the lower half of the sheet, Sendak adds a full-length sketch of Emil the Wild Thing, with a word balloon reading, “At least you got an original sketch out of it!” In fine condition, with text and sketch uniformly lightly faded, but still completely legible. Sendak sketches of any of his characters are rather uncommon, even more so from his most famous work. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
