Very early DS, two pages, 8.5 x 17, November 6, 1931. Equity Minimum contract between Hepburn and Charles Frohman, Inc. for Hepburn to appear in the role of Daisy Sage in the play entitled The Animal Kingdom, for a salary of $250.00 per week, with the first performance commencing on December 21, 1931. Signed at the bottom of the first page by Hepburn and also signed by manager “Gilbert Miller.” A crossed out pencil notation across the top reads, “after 3rd wk 200/wk + 1% gross.” Matted and framed to an overall size of 14 x 22. In fine condition, with expected light document wear.
In the summer of 1931, Hepburn was approached by Philip Barry to appear in his new play alongside Leslie Howard. Despite Hepurn feeling this role would propel her to stardom, Howard disliked the actress and she was unceremoniously fired just five days later, even though Barry had written the role of Daisy for Hepburn. It was believed that when she showed up for rehearsals in high heels, she towered over her co-star, much to his dismay. She contacted Berry after her termination, and, despite a knock to her confidence, she found a bit part in another production. As rehearsals began, she received an offer for the lead role in The Warrior’s Husband, which proved to be her breakout performance. An important document which began Hepburn’s climb to becoming a stage and Hollywood legend.
