British orator and statesman (1811–1889). ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, July 27, 1856. Letter to “Lady Alice Peel.” In part: “I had some conversation yesterday with your amiable Daughter, while sitting at your table on questions of public morality. May I ask to be permitted to present to her a volume which I venture to think one of the best which our language affords. The author of it died at the age of 28, & the book was written…chiefly whilst he was suffering from the incurable malady which sent him to an early grave.” In very good condition, with light soiling, scattered creasing and wrinkling, and a mounting strip along the left edge of the first page (away from the text with light traces on the reverse and adjoining page).
