Description

Leahy unofficially endorses James Roosevelt’s gubernatorial candidacy

TLS, one page, 7 x 8.75, five-star personal letterhead, September 6, 1950. Letter to Cornelius Vanderbilt, Jr. In full: “Replying to your letter of September 2 suggesting that I join a National Sponsoring Committee in the interest of the candidacy of James Roosevelt for Governor of California, it has been my established policy throughout my active service in the Navy to avoid all public endorsement or political association with candidates for office. It is also my understanding that the Hatch Act prohibits participation by me. I have known James Roosevelt since his childhood, am familiar with his war record, and I am pleased to extend to him personally and unofficially wishes for full success in his present political office.” In fine condition.
