Description

Lincoln passes an accusation of Confederate bribery onto Salmon Chase

War-dated handwritten endorsement, signed as president, “A. Lincoln,” dated August 10, 1863, on an off-white 2.75 x 4.5 slip clipped from a larger document. Lincoln writes, “Hon. Sec. of the Treasury, please see & hear Gen. De Ahna.” In fine condition, with a mounting remnant to a reverse edge lightly showing through to the front. De Ahna had requested to see Lincoln to present an accusation involving a Confederate attempt to bribe Union generals to betray their commands and surrender. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
