Timothy Dexter

Eccentric American businessman (1748–1806) known as ‘Lord’ Timothy Dexter whose mansion in Newburyport, Massachusetts, was decorated with life-size wooden statues of famous men including George Washington, William Pitt, Thomas Jefferson, Napoleon, and himself. ADS, signed “Timothy Dexter,” one page, 7.5 x 3.25, May 12, 1798. Dexter orders payment to another gentleman. In part the unedited text reads: “Sir, please to pay onto Mr. Chaney the flask maker fortey dolors.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds, a near-total separation of the first quarter of the document along a vertical fold, and scattered toning and soiling.
