“I beg to decline criticizing a friend’s poetry”

Baptist preacher (1834–1892). ALS signed “C. H. Spurgeon,” one page, 4.5 x 7.25, Nightingale Lane letterhead, July 10, 1873. Letter to an unidentified gentleman. In part: “I beg to decline criticizing a friend’s poetry. I should as soon think of looking him in the mouth and counting his teeth.” In very good condition, with uniform toning, slightly trimmed left edge, and a mounting remnant along reverse left edge.
