AQS in German on the reverse of a 3.5 x 5.5 postcard photo of of himself, signed in black ink, “Ernst Haeckel,” and dated June 1, 1909. Haeckel pens a quote from one of Goethe’s poems. In full (translated): “‘What more can man gain in life than for God Himself—Nature to be revealed!’ (Goethe).” The front of the postcard also bears a facsimile signature in the lower border.
