Irving was a prominent British stage actor (1838–1905) who was the first of his profession to be knighted. Jefferson was an early actor (1829–1905) who gained fame in Laura Keene’s company and appeared in many productions including Rip Van Winkle. Original ink sketches by an unknown artist showing Irving and Jefferson in Shakespearean dress on an off-white 4.25 x 5.75 card, signed below in pencil, “Henry Irving” and “J. Jefferson.” Affixed to the cover of a 5.5 x 7 Algonquin Club program for an event honoring Irving, featuring a dinner menu printed on silk bound within. Accompanied by five unsigned programs from various performances by Irving at the Royal London Lyceum Theatre. RR Auction COA.
