Description

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

German writer, scientist, and philosopher (1749–1832) who takes a place among the central intellectual and artistic figures of his day. His poetry and dramatic works provided source material for Beethoven, Schubert, and Berlioz, among others. Rare and highly desirable LS in German, signed “Goethe,” one page, 6.5 x 2.5, March 4, 1831. Untranslated note ordering an official Weimar state calendar from 1792. Matted and framed by Goodspeed’s Book Shop in Boston, with a portrait of Goethe, to an overall size of 12 x 16. Moderate scattered overall foxing, not at all affecting the legibility of the bold text and signature, otherwise fine condition. An uncommon and highly sought after signature.
