A survivor of Shiloh describes the battle as “one of the blodiest [sic] fights that was fought”

War-dated ALS signed “John Sauer,” one page, lightly-lined both sides, 5 x 8, April 17, 1862. Letter to his brother. In part (with grammar and spelling retained): “I would rote to you sooner but we was on the march…and we came very near geting into a fight so near that we got to see the rebels…we herd the canonading the day before we got there and we was ordered to leave our knapsacks and go fast as we could but we warent quite fast enough the seans of the battle field I will not try to describe it but it was one of the blodiest fights that was fought.” In fine condition, with central horizontal and vertical folds .
