Description

“I know Samson and Delilah to be one of the best subjects that I will ever make”

TLS signed “C. B. deMille,” one page, 8.5 x 11, Paramount Pictures letterhead, December 23, 1935. Letter to Aileen Brenon. In part: “Preparation for Samson and Delilah continues, but both Paramount and myself would prefer to do another subject. Paramount, because they have lost faith in the idea of Samson and Delilah, myself, because I know Samson and Delilah to be one of the best subjects that I will ever make, but I believe that a picture preferably without armies should be produced between The Crusades and Samson and Delilah. Both Harold Lamb and I think the story of Samson and Delilah as we have it now developed very fine. The reason I sent The Tragedy of Man back to you was that I received a hurry up order from somebody that your life and chastity were at stake, so I rushed it back without proper perusal, or perhaps if you had not been in such a hurry, you would have found the ‘chink’ in deMille armour.” Below, deMille added a handwritten postscript, “New York thinks I’m old fashioned anyway—I must learn to be vulgar.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds (one vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature). Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
