Henry A. Wise

American statesman and diplomat (1806–1876) who served as a brigadier general in the Confederate army, where he fought beside Lee at Appomattox Court House. His most notable act as governor of Virginia (1856–1860) was to sign the death warrant of famed abolitionist John Brown. Partly-printed DS, one page, 8 x 10, November 14, 1856. Governor Wise appoints Charles H. Austin “a Commissioner for this Commonwealth, in the State of Florida.” Signed at the conclusion by Wise and countersigned by Secretary George W. Mumford. In very good condition, with a couple of small pinholes along folds, paper loss to lower right edge, and a uniform shade of mild toning. RR Auction COA.
