William H. Seward

War-dated LS, one page, 7 x 8.5, December 23, 1861. Letter to Daniel Gardner. In part: “I have to state that you may send forward the papers relative to the case of the Harvey Birch, which shall be attended to as soon as may be practicable.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, and a couple of light brushes to first name of signature. On November, 17, 1861, the Harvey Birch, was intercepted by the Confederate steamer Nashville, and boarded by an officer and boat's crew, robbed, and burned. Accompanied by an unsigned carte-de-visite portrait. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
