A former prisoner of the Confederates receives “the pictures of ‘Libby Prison War Museum’”

New York congressman taken prisoner by Confederates while witnessing the First Battle of Bull Run; he was held at Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia, for nearly six months (1815–1892). ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, October 14, 1889. Letter to C. F. Gunther. In part: “I duly received your letter…& also later the pictures of ‘Libby Prison War Museum’ for which I am greatly obliged…Will you please send me a copy of Kent’s Book of Libby Prison which you informed me he was writing.” In fine condition. Accompanied by an unsigned original carte-de-visite portrait. RR Auction COA.
