First ironclad warship commissioned by the US Navy during the Civil War, most famous for her participation in the Battle of Hampton Roads against the CSS Virginia. Vintage glossy 5 x 3.75 photo showing the deck of the Monitor in July 1862, featuring the warship’s prominent rotating turret, with the muzzle of one of Monitor's two XI-inch Dahlgren smoothbore guns displayed. Two officers are on the right side, one holding binoculars, and dents from the battle with the CSS Virginia are also visible. Photo printed during the early 20th century, likely using the original negative as the image is extremely sharp. In fine condition, with some light creases and a tiny tear to the bottom edge.
